The Revival of Oatmeal

We haven't had oatmeal in a long time. We used to have instant oatmeal for breakfast, but then Quaker Oats changed the ingredients, and I didn't feel like having it, anymore.

But tucked away in a cupboard, there were the regular oats that you cook to make oatmeal, and today was a good day to remember them. I decided to make oatmeal as part of our lunch.

Now, the directions on the container said to add salt and water, but in our house oatmeal always went with sugar and milk. So I took a cup and a half of whole milk, boiled it with two tablespoons of sugar, reduced the heat,  then added  a cup of oats and let them cook for about five minutes. Then I served it in two bowls, one for me and one for Bow.

It was still kind of hot when Bow asked for his bowl of Oatmeal. But he enjoyed every bit of it.

  1. I make oat meal with sugar and water, just like you, but I add a few cut up apples, and a tiny bit of cinnamon. It tastes like apple pie that way.

    1. I was inspired by you to revive oatmeal in our household. I guess the biggest difference is that I use whole milk, rather than water. But I am thinking of following your example and adding apple slices, because I think my daughter might like that better. She likes those packets of instant oatmeal that are fruit flavored.

    2. Okay I use milk too. I think I was not paying attention when I wrote that. Oat meal with water is not as good as with milk. We also have added other fruits in the past, like blueberries.

    3. Okay, good, then we do both make it essentially the same way. I have some frozen pear and peach slices from the fruit on our trees this year that I might add in later on this winter, when oatmeal seems especially appealing.
